Cuarenta y nueve años después de la masacre de atletas israelíes en los Juegos Olímpicos de Múnich en 1972, la ceremonia de inauguración de los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 2020 incluyó, por primera vez, una conmemoración oficial de los fallecidos en el ataque terrorista. Se rindió homenaje a los que se perdieron durante la pandemia y a lo largo de la historia olímpica. Se mencionó específicamente a la delegación israelí asesinada en los Juegos de Múnich. Se guardó un momento de silencio dentro del estadio, junto con un espectáculo de danza en honor a los fallecidos.
“Recordamos especialmente a los que perdieron la vida durante los Juegos Olímpicos”, dijo el locutor. “Un grupo sigue ocupando un lugar fuerte en todos nuestros recuerdos y representa a todos los que hemos perdido en los juegos: los miembros de la delegación de Israel en los Juegos Olímpicos de Múnich 1972”.
En el atentado de 1972 en los Juegos Olímpicos de Múnich fueron asesinados 11 atletas israelíes por el grupo terrorista palestino Septiembre Negro. Dos de los israelíes fueron asesinados en la Villa Olímpica. Los terroristas palestinos secuestraron a otros nueve y exigieron la liberación de cientos de prisioneros palestinos, así como de dos destacados militantes de izquierda de Alemania Occidental.
Tras un intento fallido de las fuerzas de seguridad alemanas de recuperar a los rehenes, los palestinos apuntaron sus armas contra los israelíes, matándolos a todos.
Las 11 víctimas fueron David Berger, Ze’ev Friedman, Yoseff Gutfreund, Moshe Weinberg, Yoseff Romano, Mark Slavin, Eliezer Halfin, Yakov Springer, Andre Spitzer, Amitzur Shapira y Kehat Shorr. Sus historias individuales pueden leerse en esta entrada del blog de 2014.

Las familias de las víctimas de Múnich han hecho campaña durante años para conseguir un mayor reconocimiento público de los fallecidos por parte del Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI). El COI fue criticado por negarse a guardar un momento de silencio por las víctimas israelíes durante la inauguración de los Juegos de Londres de 2012, 40 años después del atentado.
En 2016, se celebró una ceremonia en memoria de los fallecidos durante los Juegos de Río, también bajo la dirección de Bach. Con dos viudas de las víctimas y varios miembros del equipo israelí mirando, Bach dijo entonces que la masacre de Múnich “fue un ataque no sólo a nuestros compañeros olímpicos, sino también un ataque a los valores que representa la Villa Olímpica”.
Igal Carmi, jefe del Comité Olímpico Israelí, dijo que Israel estaba “agradecido” por el homenaje de 2021.
“El Comité Olímpico Internacional cumplió con los anhelos de las familias de las 11 víctimas israelíes de Múnich y las conmemoró valientemente en la ceremonia de apertura de esta noche”, dijo en un comunicado.
