Los atletas de Israel ganaron más medallas y llegaron a más competiciones finales que nunca en estos Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio, desde la primera aparición del país en las Olimpiadas de Helsinki 1952. Antes de Tokio, donde Israel terminó en el lugar 39 del medallero, los atletas israelíes habían ganado un total de 9 medallas olímpicas durante un período de 24 años y un total de 7 Juegos Olímpico. Las 2 primeras medallas de Israel fueron ganadas por los judocas Yael Arad y Oren Smadja, quienes recibieron medallas de plata y bronce, respectivamente, en Barcelona en 1992.
Cuatro años después, el velerista Gal Fridman ganó una medalla de bronce en Atlanta, donde fue el único israelí que subió al podio durante esos Juegos Olímpicos.
En 2000, Israel volvió a ganar una sola medalla de bronce: en el último día de los Juegos de Sydney, el piragüista Michael Kolganov terminó tercero en la carrera de 500 metros.
Luego, en Atenas, Fridman llevó a Israel su primera medalla de oro, un evento que produjo una imagen icónica y a menudo ridiculizada después de que la entonces ministra de Educación, Cultura y Deportes de Israel, Limor Livnat, saltó al podio para besarlo frente a las cámaras. Si bien todos estos logros pasados se celebraron en ese momento, el estado de ánimo nacional fue claramente diferente en esta ocasión, ya que los atletas israelíes ganaron 4 medallas en Tokio, más de lo que el país había logrado en los tres Juegos Olímpicos anteriores combinados.
El bronce de Avishag Semberg en taekwondo, ganado el primer fin de semana de Tokio 2020, fue seguido una semana después por otro logro en judo, luego de que el equipo mixto de judo subiera al podio con un bronce.
Al día siguiente, el gimnasta Artem Dolgopyat ganó una medalla de oro en la competencia de ejercicios de piso, haciendo historia al conseguir para Israel su segunda medalla de oro y la primera en el campo de la gimnasia altamente competitiva.
Luego, en el penúltimo día de las Olimpiadas, la gimnasta rítmica Linoy Ashram, una de las últimas atletas israelíes en competir, logró para Israel su segunda medalla de oro en Tokio y la cuarta en general, dando a los espectadores israelíes un final feliz.
Además de los ganadores de medallas, varios atletas israelíes lograron pasar las rondas de clasificación y la final, incluida la natación, estableciendo nuevos precedentes de éxito incluso sin obtener una medalla.
Amnon Harari, editor principal de deportes del periódico Haaretz, piensa que este éxito se debe a que “todos los planetas se alinearon para Israel esta vez. Comenzó con un largo proceso de identificación, entrenamiento, apoyo y gestión de los atletas, que se volvieron más “profesionalizados” a lo largo de los años.
“Vimos normas que se establecieron hace años e incluso décadas y, aunque tomó tiempo, condujeron a grandes resultados. Los atletas que dieron sus primeros pasos hace 10 o 15 años, como Linoy Ashram y Artem Dolgopyat, son el resultado final de este largo proceso”, dijo.
Añadió que los atletas israelíes llegaron a Tokio “con más experiencia física y mental”, y que gran parte del mérito debe ir a sus entrenadores.
“Los atletas que ganaron medallas y llegaron a la final disfrutan de un cuerpo técnico de primer nivel, que se compara con los entrenadores de algunas de las ‘superpotencias’ deportivas más importantes del mundo. Se necesitó tiempo para crear este grupo de talentos, y el desafío ahora será sea preservarlo y expandirlo”.
