Como todos los años fue otorgado el Premio Nobel de la Paz, en esta ocasión a dos luchadores por la libertad de expresión en sus países. El comité resaltó que los galardonados recibieron el premio por su valiente labor en aras de la libertad de expresión en Filipinas y Rusia.
Añadió que, al mismo tiempo, Ressa y Muratov representan a todos los periodistas que se pronuncian por este ideal en un mundo en el que la democracia y la libertad de prensa enfrentan crecientes condiciones adversas.
Los galardonados compartirán un premio que incluye un cheque de US$1,1 millones.
Ressa y Muratov fueron seleccionados de entre 329 candidatos.
Entre ellos se encontraban la activista del medio ambiente Greta Thunberg, el encarcelado disidente ruso Alexei Navalni y la líder de la oposición en Bielorrusia Svetlana Tikhanovskaya.
Quiénes son
María Ressa, que es cofundadora del sitio noticioso Rappler, fue elogiada por el comité por “usar la libertad de expresión para “denunciar el abuso de poder, el uso de violencia y el creciente autoritarismo en su país de origen, Filipinas”.
En una transmisión en vivo este viernes a través de su sitio Rappler, la veterana periodista confesó estar en “shock”, al tiempo que dijo que “nada es posible sin los hechos”.
“Un mundo sin hechos significa un mundo sin verdad y confianza”, añadió.
Mucho de su trabajo se ha enfocado en la polémica y violenta campaña antidrogas del presidente de Filipinas, Rodrigo Duterte, a la que el comité Nobel tildó de “asesina”, como una campaña que se asemeja a una guerra contra la propia población por el gran número de muertes.
A través de Rappler, Ressa también ha documentado cómo las redes sociales están siendo utilizadas para propagar las noticias falsas, acosar a los opositores del gobierno y manipular el debate público.
La periodista ha sido objeto de una serie de demandas que ella señala como actos de intimidación en su contra y de otros periodistas de su país. En marzo de 2019 fue arrestada en el aeropuerto de Manila por supuesto fraude, pero liberada poco después tras el clamor de periodistas internacionales
En mayo de este año Ressa recibió el Premio Mundial de la Libertad de Prensa Unesco – Guillermo Cano, uno de los más prestigiosos reconocimientos periodísticos del mundo. En 2018 fue nombrada personalidad del año por la revista Time.
Por otra parte, el comité dijo que Dmitry Muratov, cofundador del diario independiente Novaja Gazeta, durante décadas ha defendido la libertad de expresión en Rusia bajo crecientes condiciones adversas.
Novaya Gazeta informa de manera regular sobre las acusaciones de corrupción y abuso oficiales en Rusia. Seis de sus reporteros han sido asesinados, incluyendo Anna Politkovskaya.
En una entrevista hecha por el popular canal Podyom en Telegram, Muratov dijo: “Estoy riendo. De ninguna manera me lo esperaba. Esto está hecho una locura aquí”.
El editor catalogó el premio como “una retribución al periodismo ruso que ahora está siendo reprimido”.
No obstante, el Kremlin felicitó a Muratov a través de su portavoz, Dmitry Peskov, que expresó: “Él trabaja persistentemente de acuerdo con sus propios ideales, está dedicado a ellos, tiene talento y es valiente”.
El propósito del premio es honrar a un individuo u organización que haya “hecho la mejor labor en pos de la fraternidad de naciones”.
El ganador del año pasado fue el Programa Mundial de Alimentos de Naciones Unidas (WFP), que fue galardonado por sus esfuerzos en el combate contra el hambre y para mejorar las condiciones para la paz.
