Los líderes palestinos nunca pierden la oportunidad de condenar a Israel y acusarlo de cometer «crímenes» contra los palestinos. Esto se da en el contexto de la continua y virulenta campaña palestina de incitación contra Israel.
Los líderes palestinos, sin embargo, siguen ajenos al sufrimiento de su pueblo en algunos países árabes, especialmente Siria, donde más de 4.100 palestinos han muerto durante los combates entre el ejército sirio y la oposición o han muerto como resultado de la tortura, el hambre y negligencia médica en la última década. El intento de los líderes de la Autoridad Palestina de restaurar sus lazos con el régimen de Assad ha provocado críticas agudas, generalizadas y duras de muchos palestinos y sirios. Dicen que no pueden entender la lógica de reconciliarse con un líder árabe que tiene tanta sangre palestina en sus manos.
A principios de este mes, una delegación que representaba a la facción gobernante Fatah encabezada por el presidente de la Autoridad Palestina, Mahmoud Abbas , visitó Damasco, donde sus miembros se reunieron con el ministro de Relaciones Exteriores sirio, Faisal Mekdad. La delegación, encabezada por el secretario general de Fatah, Jibril Rajoub, entregó al ministro una carta de Abbas al presidente sirio, Bashar Assad.
La carta «afirma la profundidad de las relaciones históricas entre las dos partes y el deseo [de Abbas] de fortalecer las relaciones entre el Estado de Palestina y la República Árabe de Siria».
Rajoub anunció más tarde que Abbas planeaba visitar Damasco pronto para reunirse con Assad. Rajoub también fue citado diciendo que la decisión de suspender la membresía de Siria en la Liga Árabe era «vergonzosa». La decisión fue tomada en 2011 por la Liga Árabe en respuesta al fracaso de Siria para poner fin a su sangrienta y violenta represión contra los manifestantes anti-Assad.

El escritor y periodista palestino-sirio Suad Qatanani comentó:
“Mahmoud Abbas visitará al que (Assad) mató de hambre y mató a los palestinos en el campo de refugiados de Yarmouk (cerca de Damasco). ¿Le preguntará a Assad por qué destruyó los campos palestinos y desplazó a su gente? ¿Le preguntará a Assad sobre los que fueron asesinados en Siria? ¿Le preguntará a Assad sobre el destino de los palestinos que desaparecieron en las prisiones sirias?
Según el Grupo de Acción para los Palestinos de Siria (AGPS), con sede en Londres, un organismo de control de los derechos humanos que supervisa la situación de los refugiados palestinos en la Siria devastada por la guerra, 1.458 palestinos de Yarmouk han sido asesinados desde 2011. Esto incluye a 496 que murieron debido a bombardeo del campo, 208 que murieron de hambre o negligencia médica debido al asedio del ejército sirio y 215 torturados hasta la muerte en prisiones sirias. Según un informe reciente de la AGPS:
«El campamento de Yarmouk se considera una de las zonas más afectadas de Siria como consecuencia del asedio impuesto por el ejército sirio y sus fuerzas leales desde 2013, mientras que en 2014 se cortó por completo el agua y la electricidad para la población, y la entrada de alimentos También se prohibieron artículos médicos y de otro tipo».
“Se han cometido crímenes de guerra y crímenes de lesa humanidad contra civiles palestinos y sirios en Yarmouk, que está bajo un asedio brutal por parte de las fuerzas del gobierno sirio”, reveló Amnistía Internacional en 2014. Los residentes dijeron al grupo de derechos humanos que no habían comido frutas ni verduras durante muchos meses, mientras que otros dijeron que habían recurrido a comer perros y gatos.
La Agencia de Obras Públicas y Socorro de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados de Palestina (UNRWA) señaló que antes de la guerra civil en Siria, el campamento de Yarmouk albergaba a casi 160.000 palestinos. Hoy, el número de residentes que viven en el campo se estima en 3.000. En 2018, se estimó que el 60% del campo había sido destruido por el ejército sirio y las milicias pro-Assad.
Durante su visita a Siria, los miembros de la delegación palestina asistieron a un mitin en el campamento de Yarmouk para conmemorar el 57º aniversario del lanzamiento del primer ataque terrorista de Fatah contra Israel.
Al comentar sobre la visita, el abogado y escritor palestino-sirio Ayman Abo Hashem escribió:
«La visita de la delegación de Fatah a Damasco y el mitin [de Fatah] realizado en las ruinas del campamento de Yarmouk son una puñalada en la espalda de todas las víctimas palestinas y sirias cuyas casas fueron destruidas y que fueron asesinadas, arrestadas y desplazadas por el régimen criminal del régimen de Assad. Palestina se niega a asociarse con líderes que hacen la vista gorda ante sus tragedias y solo se preocupan por sus intereses».
La delegación de Fatah que visitó Damasco se ha enfrentado a severas críticas y condenas generalizadas de palestinos y sirios por ignorar la «tragedia» de los palestinos en Siria y no incluirla en las discusiones con funcionarios del gobierno sirio, informó AGPS el 8 de enero, y agregó:
“Varios activistas palestinos expresaron su indignación por la negligencia y marginación de Fatah y la Autoridad Palestina de la tragedia de los palestinos en Siria y su falta de sentido de responsabilidad hacia ella… Los activistas dijeron que el liderazgo palestino trabaja para sus propios intereses, olvidando el dolor de su pueblo y mostrando indiferencia ante su sufrimiento».
Samer, un palestino de Yarmouk, le dijo a AGPS:
“Este completo desprecio [por la difícil situación de los palestinos en Siria] fue aceptado con gran resentimiento por parte de los palestinos, que ya no confían en el liderazgo que los subestima y quiere lograr sus propios logros políticos a expensas de su pueblo”.
Al señalar que 620 palestinos han muerto a causa de la tortura en prisiones y centros de detención sirios desde 2011, AGPS señaló que los palestinos de Siria instaron a la embajada palestina en Damasco docenas de veces a intervenir para liberar a los palestinos retenidos por el régimen sirio y detener el asedio de Yarmouk y los repetidos ataques contra campamentos palestinos, especialmente ataques aéreos y bombardeos con barriles. Sus súplicas no fueron escuchadas.
El activista palestino Abu Mustafa al-Qaoud dijo que los líderes palestinos nunca han usado sus relaciones con el régimen sirio para servir los intereses de los palestinos en Siria. “La Autoridad Palestina no ha logrado asegurar la liberación de un palestino [de la detención siria] o el regreso de una familia desplazada a su hogar”, se quejó al-Qaoud.
