En ese mismo año, la Christian Broadcast Network también encontró que «el cristianismo está creciendo más rápidamente en la República Islámica de Irán que en cualquier otro país». Shay Khatiri de la Universidad Johns Hopkins aseveró el año pasado que en Irán «el islam es la religión que más se encoge, mientras que el cristianismo es la que más rápido crece».
Esta tendencia es el resultado de la práctica extrema del islam que el régimen impuso. Un líder iraní cristiano explicó en 2019: ¿Qué tal si te dijera que el islam está muerto? ¿Y si te dijera que las mezquitas en Irán están vacías? ¿Y que nadie sigue al islam dentro de Irán?… ¿Y si te dijera que el mejor evangelista para Jesús fue el Ayatola Jomeini [el fundador de la República Islámica]? Un pastor evangélico iraní, anteriormente musulmán, ya mostraba la misma opinión en 2008: «Nos encontramos con algo que es más que la conversión hacia la fe cristiana. Es un éxodo masivo del islam».
Como fenómeno clandestino, los creyentes cristianos de trasfondos musulmanes [Muslim Background Believers o MBBs por las siglas en inglés] carecen de clero y de iglesias. Más bien, son discípulos que se inician por sí solos en pequeñas iglesias caseras de cuatro o cinco miembros cada uno, con cánticos silenciosos, o ninguno en absoluto. Su liderazgo, además de laico, está compuesto principalmente por mujeres, en claro contraste con los mulás que gobiernan Irán.
En otro contraste con el Gobierno, los creyentes cristianos clandestinos tienden a ser fervientemente pro-Israel. Como lo explica un documental, «arrodillándose ante el Mesías judío con afecto acalorado hacia el pueblo judío». Un converso dice, «nos enamoramos de los judíos». Los conversos incluso expresaron deseos de construir una «iglesia de la resistencia» en Irán para contrarrestar las amenazas del régimen hacia Israel.
Dada la naturaleza clandestina de las iglesias caseras en Irán, las estimaciones sobre el tamaño del movimiento son necesariamente vagas. Open Doors identificó 370.000 cristianos secretos en 2013 y 720.000 en 2020. Duane Alexander Miller estima unos 500.000, Hormoz Shariat por lo menos 1.000.000, y GAMAAN incluso más.

El castigo puede ser severo. En 1990, por ejemplo, el reverendo Hossein Soodmand fue ejecutado por apostasía. En efecto, Lela Gilbert y Arielle Del Turco argumentan que el régimen considera al cristianismo «una amenaza existencial» a la República Islámica. Y así debería, postula Reza Safa, la fundadora nacida en Irán de Nejat TV («misionando para los musulmanes viviendo en naciones de habla farsi»), que escribió un libro llamado «El ocaso venidero del Islam en Irán» (The Coming Fall of Islam in Iran). Safa piensa a los cristianos iraníes como «un ejército de Dios» que están acercando a Irán «al borde de otra revolución, esta vez orquestada» por un espíritu cristiano.
