Sin embargo, hasta el asesinato del Rey Nadir Shah en 1933, el país fue notablemente tolerante hacia los judíos durante más de mil años. Las principales ciudades afganas, como Herat y Kabul, en una época fueron un puerto seguro para los judíos que huían de la persecución en otros países. En un momento, en Afganistán vivieron miles de judíos que disfrutaron de paz y prosperidad.
Hoy en día, sólo queda un judío en Afganistán.
El registro de la historia de los judíos afganos comenzó en el año 900 E.C, dos siglos después de que el país se convirtiera al islam. Esto no quiere decir que antes no vivieran allí judíos, sino que se perdieron los registros que podrían probar la existencia de una comunidad judía preislámica en Afganistán. Sin embargo, hay algunas tribus afganas como los durrani, los yussafzai y más notablemente los pashtun que dicen ser una de las Diez Tribus Perdidas. En el caso de los pashtun, hoy en día el grupo étnico mayoritario en Afganistán, una de sus leyendas tribales afirma que un grupo llamado los “Bani Israel” se asentaron cerca del pueblo moderno de Herat y luego se convirtieron al islam cuando su líder se encontró con Mahoma.
La Biblioteca Virtual Judía afirma que algunos pashtun tienen nombres que suenan judíos, como Asheri y Naftali, y que practican costumbres judías como casarse bajo una jupá y circuncidar a sus hijos ocho días después del nacimiento. Para agregar más leña al fuego, hace algunos años la prensa sensacionalista publicó un informe que declaraba que los miembros del talibán podrían ser descendientes de judíos. Una prueba de ADN financiada por el gobierno de Israel no encontró ninguna conexión entre los judíos y los pashtun.
Algunos reportes mencionan a judíos persas que huyeron de los invasores musulmanes en el siglo VII y VIII, pero los registros verdaderos que dan testimonio de una presencia judía en Afganistán son del siglo X E.C. Estos registros, encontrados recientemente en cuevas al norte de Afganistán, están escritos en judeo-persa y se los conoce colectivamente como la “guenizá afgana” (una referencia a la gran importancia de documentos judíos de la «guenizá del Cairo» que se encontraron hace más de un siglo). Los documentos muestran evidencia de actividad comercial judía en la parte afgana de la Ruta de la Seda, una antigua ruta de comercio que iba desde China al Mar Mediterráneo. Allí también se encontraron cartas, registros financieros y comentarios rabínicos y bíblicos.
En su apogeo en los años 1000 y 1100, se estima que la población judía de Afganistán llegó a tener entre 40.000 y 80.000 miembros. Muchos de ellos se dedicaban al comercio de cuero y karakul (piel de oveja) y a menudo viajaban largas distancias entre Afganistán, Irán, India y Asia Central. Muchas veces esos viajes eran peligrosos, llevando a los mercaderes judíos a través de angostos pasadizos montañosos en la parte este del país, donde se puede ver tallados en las rocas rezos en hebreo y arameo.
La población judía fue diezmada por la invasión mongola de 1222. Hubo un breve resurgimiento en el siglo XVI, cuando los judios volvieron a cobrar prominencia en el comercio entre Afganistán, India y la región del Golfo Pérsico. Sin embargo, las rutas de comercio comenzaron a declinar y la mayoría de los judios afganos se empobrecieron.
En 1839, las autoridades musulmanas decidieron convertir a la fuerza a los judios de Persia, lo cual provocó que miles de judíos persas huyeran a Afganistán. Esto le devolvió a la población judía su antigua gloria al llegar a contar con 40.000 habitantes. Herat, la ciudad del noroeste, ahora la tercera ciudad del país, se convirtió en el centro de esta nueva comunidad judía. Hoy en día sólo quedan en pie en la ciudad cuatro sinagogas, dos de las cuales fueron convertidas en mezquitas, una es una escuela y la última, la sinagoga Yu Aw, se convirtió en un centro cultural islámico. La antigua sinagoga Yu Aw todavía tiene en sus paredes inscripciones en hebreo y quedan allí los restos de una mikve. Cerca hay un cementerio judío que pertenece Arif Mosaee, un judío afgano cuya familia está enterrada allí.
Desde finales del siglo XIX, la situación de los judíos afganos empeoró progresivamente. En 1870, las autoridades musulmanas promulgaron duras medidas antijudías que provocaran una emigración en masa a los países vecinos. En los centros judíos más grandes de Maimana y Herat hubo pogromos y los judíos se vieron obligados a pagar altos impuestos y a servir en las fuerzas armadas.
En 1927, la población judía se había reducido a 5.000. Los judios tuvieron un breve resurgimiento bajo el reinado del Rey Nadir Shah (1929-33) quien revirtió muchos de los decretos antijudíos y les dio igualdad de derechos como ciudadanos. El desastre ocurrió cuando el rey fue asesinado y la propaganda nazi se filtró dentro del país, provocando más pogromos y la segregación en de los judíos en guetos en Herat y Kabul. Las duras leyes económicas llevaron a que muchos judíos se fueran del país en la década del 30 y los que se quedaron estuvieron restringidos a las ciudades de Herat, Kabul y Balkh.
La gran mayoría de la población judía dejó Afganistán en los años 60. La mayoría se fue a Israel, y algunos se fueron a Nueva York y Europa. Hoy en día, viven en Queens, Nueva York, más de 1.000 judíos afganos. El libro de Sara Aharon “From Kabul to Queens” (De Kabul a Queens), cuenta la historia de los judíos afganos y su lucha para aclimatarse a la cultura de los Estados Unidos.
La vida judía en Afganistán era similar a la de Persia, pero mantuvo algunas costumbres singulares. Como muchas otras comunidades judías en diferentes partes del mundo, la comunidad judía afgana tomó prestadas algunas costumbres de sus vecinos. Entre esas costumbres se encuentra el hecho de quitarse los zapatos antes de entrar a la sinagoga. Los líderes comunitarios requirieron que las mujeres judías usaran en público una burka azul (que las cubre por completo), mientras que las mujeres musulmanas usan una burka blanca. El diseño de las sinagogas afganas se vio influenciado por la arquitectura de las mezquitas locales.
Hoy en Afganistán sólo hay un judío. Su nombre es Zablon Simintov y vive en Kabul. Su historia se difundió en los medios internacionales y es al mismo tiempo trágica e inspiradora. Simintov, nació en Turkmenistán, y vive en la ciudad capital de Kabul, en el piso superior de la última sinagoga que hubo en funcionamiento en la Calle de las Flores. Él alquila el piso inferior a varios negocios y también tiene allí su propio comercio, el café Balkh Bastan. Él vendía alfombras y antigüedades hasta que oficiales del gobierno confiscaron su mercancía.
Toda la familia de Simintov emigró a Israel y él vive solo en la sinagoga. Los talibanes robaron hace años el Séfer Torá y la sinagoga está en muy mal estado. Simintov se lleva bastante bien con sus vecinos, quienes lo tratan respetuosamente.
